The European Union is seriously considering imposing sanctions against Israeli ministers in response to the actions of settlers in the West Bank. Yesterday’s attack on the Palestinian village of Jit sparked strong criticism from the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell. In his post on the platform X, he expressed deep concern about the situation, emphasizing that «day by day, almost with impunity, Israeli settlers are inciting violence in the West Bank, endangering any chances for peace.»
Borrell stressed that such actions pose a significant threat to the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the region. He noted that the Israeli government is responsible for stopping these «unacceptable actions» and called for immediate measures to curb the violence.
In this context, Borrell announced his intention to propose that the EU impose sanctions against those who support the aggressive actions of the settlers. He specified that these sanctions could affect not only the settlers themselves but also certain members of the Israeli government who, in his view, are contributing to the escalation of violence.
