UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed serious concern over the intensifying conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, warning that the situation in Lebanon could rapidly deteriorate. In his statement, he urged the international community and regional leaders to take all necessary steps to prevent further escalation.
«This is a warning signal that demands immediate action. All parties to the conflict must uphold international humanitarian law and prevent further suffering of the civilian population,» Türk stated. He also emphasized that Israel’s warnings to Lebanese residents before conducting strikes cannot justify the harm inflicted on civilians.
The UN Human Rights Council reminded all involved parties that the protection of civilians must remain a top priority and called on them to adhere to international legal obligations.
